2. England’s Colonial Experiments 1590-1750

Roanoke A Failure 1580s – Unknown Sir Walter Raleigh sent by Elizabeth I When he returned the colony was gone.

Jamestown, 1607 Characteristics of the settlers Located in a marshy and humid local. Disease almost wiped them out. Saved by tobacco John Smith / Pocahontas/ John Rolfe

First Slaves Arrive 1619 At the same time as women British were making $$$$$$$ from the slave trade.

Plymouth, 1620 Characteristics of the settlers A group of religious Separatists known as Pilgrims. Had to rely on help from the Native Americans

Massachusetts Bay Colony, 1629 Founded by Puritans “City on a Hill” where the will of God would be manifested. Religious dissent was not tolerated in this colony. Those thrown out founded the other New England colonies

Salem Witch Trials Demonstrated the social conflict present in the American colonies.
