The Structure and Reactivity of PdO Surfaces Eric I. Altman, Department of Chemical Engineering, Yale University Motivation: Understand how oxidation affects catalytic activity and reaction mechanisms on transition metals. Growth of epitaxial PdO model catalysts and characterization of their reactivity. Surface Diffraction Bulk Diffraction - XRD Film grows smoothly and epitaxially for 7 nm, then roughens but remains epitaxial. XPS indicates the changes are due to oxidation and reduction. Fully oxidized films are [110]-oriented PdO. We have successfully grown well-ordered expitaxial PdO. Reactivity measurements indicate that the films are inert for CO oxidation.
