Culture and Identity 1.8

Introduction Is the culture of Newfoundland and Labrador unique? What symbol is the best representation of your identity?

Introduction When people share a culture, they often feel a sense of belonging (shared experiences-geo, history, economics, politics) Having a group identity can create a sense of unity amongst its members (sports team or a small nation) Most people identify with a variety of groups (Newfoundlanders/Labradorians – Canadians- specific commmunity) The distinctive expressions of culture that are found in a particular region contribute to that area’s sense of identity

It is important to understand that that not all people who belong to a single group will have the same definition of what that group’s identity is Rural vs Urban Newfoundland Non-fishing vs fishing community

Symbols and Identity Groups and individuals often use symbols or icons to represent their identities to others These also help build a sense of community Symbols can be borrow from Geo, History, Economics, and Political events
