Figure 1 The left panel illustrates the anatomical location of claudins forming the zonula occludens between epithelial cells. The right panel (modified with permission from reference 8) illustrates the topology and secondary structure of claudin-2 with its 4 predicted membrane spanning domains and 2 extracellular loops (ECL1 and ECL2) extending into the paracellular space.
