Investigation Before Explanation Why is the man so upset? How might this hotdog and bun problem be solved without opening packages?

Least Common Multiple

Definition A multiple is the product of a whole number by an integer. The Least Common Multiple is the smallest multiple that two or more numbers share.

Visual

Sample Problem Ms. Vandever wants to make an ice cream and cookie sandwich. The ice cream truck comes to her neighborhood every 4th day. The cookie truck comes to her house every 6th day. When will she have both ice cream and cookies to make her ice cream cookie sandwich?

Purpose an event that is or will be repeating over and over. LCMs might relate to: an event that is or will be repeating over and over. purchasing multiple items in order to have enough. figuring out when something will happen again at the same time.

Connections LCMs can also be helpful in: Finding equivalent fractions Adding and subtracting fractions

Related Problem

Related Problem You and your friend go to a carnival that has both a red and yellow Ferris wheel. You get on the red Ferris wheel at the same time your friend gets on the yellow Ferris wheel. The rides begin at the same time, but the red one travels at a faster rate than the yellow one. How much time goes by before you and your friend are at the same location on the ride once again?

More information … The red ride travels one full rotation in 3 minutes. The yellow ride takes 5 minutes to make a full rotation.

Active Practice You will now work with a partner to solve some problems around the room. Record your answers in your math notebook. We will review the answers to the problems at the end of the period.
