Who watched this over the summer? Click pictures for links to videos and articles. What were your highlights? Discuss on your tables. Churchtown Primary School

Key question Could you be an Olympian one day? Churchtown Primary School

Katherine Grainger Olympic rower. Five Olympic medals. Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian. Six-time World Champion. What inspired Katherine Grainger to be an Olympian? Churchtown Primary School

Some key quotes from Katherine: “Certainly, when I started rowing, I wasn’t the best at it. I wasn’t the best by a long way. In fact, I was one of the worst!” “They selected four boats and I wasn’t in any of them, so I had completely failed [to make the team]….I was so frustrated and so annoyed at myself and so disappointed. I just thought at that point, I will never find myself back in this situation.” “I always want to be better at it.” “The biggest thing I would say to anyone is that you are all capable than far more than what you know right now. You might think there are limits and other people might tell you there are limits, but you have no idea what you are capable of. The biggest thing you owe yourself is the chance to go out there and find out just what you can do.” Churchtown Primary School

Other advice from Olympic athletes: “You’re always going to have fears in whatever you do, whether it’s starting a new job or trying a new skill in gymnastics, or diving off a 10m board for the first time. Whatever it may be, there’s always going to be fear. But it’s how your overcome them and how you get through them. It’s not always about the end result, it’s about the journey.” – Sam Oldham, bronze medallist for gymnastics in London, 2012. “Although the majority of the time I did try my hardest, there were times when I didn’t and I would just like to say to myself, to always your try best. Then you can never be upset with yourself.” – Gemma Gibbons, silver medallist for judo in London, 2012. Churchtown Primary School

Some of this year’s Team GB almost didn’t make it to Rio! Churchtown Primary School

Key questions What have you learned about the attitudes of these Olympic athletes? What skills and qualities are important to be successful? Churchtown Primary School

Key questions Is it about hard work or natural ability Key questions Is it about hard work or natural ability? Are you born talented? Churchtown Primary School

“Being successful…is more of a choice.” “Top athletes believe that ability comes from working hard, rather than being born lucky. That’s why they choose to continually challenge themselves instead of only working on what they’re already good at.” If they can’t do something, they don’t feel they’ll never be able to do it. They understand that they just can’t do it yet.” “Being successful…is more of a choice.” Churchtown Primary School

Key question Is it just about winning medals? Can you have had a different kind of success at the Olympics? Churchtown Primary School

What have we learned? Churchtown Primary School

How we can apply this to our school work this year? Churchtown Primary School

Our aims this year: Forget the competition. Think like an Olympic athlete. Forget the competition. Forget about winning – concentrate on the process! Set yourself goals. Have confidence! Learn from your mistakes or setbacks. Relax! Churchtown Primary School
