Unit Assessment Take-home writing assignment 1 paragraph How should we view farming and domestication? Are they the foundation of all civilization, the cause of most of our problems today, or somewhere in-between?

Unit Assessment – Step 1: Reading 1 new text to help with this assignment Empires of Food by Evan Fraser & Andrew Rimas Highlight & annotate as you like Be looking for information that can help answer our question: Was farming a good thing (foundation of civilization) or a bad thing (root of all of our problems)?

Unit Assessment – Step 2: Gather Evidence Decide how you are going to answer the question Agriculture is the foundation of all society Agriculture is the cause of all of our problems Agriculture is neither good or bad Gather your evidence From your notes & readings, what tells you your answer is correct? Look for quotes, facts, statistics, etc.

Unit Assessment – Step 3: Writing Claim: start with your thesis statement An argument – take a position Evidence: proof 3 pieces From readings, videos, notes, etc. Warrant: analysis/explanation For each piece of evidence, explain HOW it proves your claim Conclusion What’s it all mean (restate your thesis) Wrap it up, final thought

FAQ No, you do not need a counter-argument. No, you do not need background information. Yes, you need to cite your sources. Author’s last name in parenthesis at the end of the sentence will suffice, no need for a bibliography. All readings can be found in the World History bin at the back of the room, help yourself. They’re also on the website. Evidence can be quotes, but it doesn’t have to be, you can put it in your own words. If you’re using word-for-word from the reading then you need quotation marks
