Project Highlights Focus our educational efforts on educating young people with our k-12 Green Schools program and college level Green Campus program Why Students? Students are the customers of their schools and spend most of their waking hours there. They know where energy is used and can be creative about saving it. Students can leave a legacy with sustainable policy. Young people have the enthusiasm and attention to learn something new and pass the knowledge onto their parents. Adults are often too busy or too set in their ways to incorporate new ideas into their daily habits. Finally, young people can really benefit from real-world learning and career development from an early age. Hopefully we can inspire them to dedicate their careers to sustainability.

New Opportunities Earth Day

New Opportunities Pathways to Green Schools Pennsylvania is participating in the pilot year of Green Ribbon Schools, a U.S. Dept. of Ed. Program to recognize Green Schools. Applications are on the Pennsylvania Department of Education website, and are due February 23, 2012. In late October, the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) announced that it would participate in the pilot year of Green Ribbon Schools, which was created by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) to recognize those schools will have achieved or made considerable progress toward energy efficient buildings, healthy students and school environment, and the environmental literacy of all graduates. PDE is pleased to announce that the Green Ribbon Schools Application is now available on the PDE website and at the Pathways to Green Schools’ website.  Interested public and private schools throughout the Commonwealth will submit their application for consideration to PDE.  You can read the full PDE announcement here. The deadline to apply is Thursday, February 23, 2012.

Road Map Check In Pull together data into a final audit report Students might want to start by creating an energy club and finding a regular meeting time. They then can organize themselves in order to audit as many rooms as possible. They should look for small changes in each classroom as well as practical solutions to larger problems (example: pipes at Oyster). It’s important that they keep all of their data, which they can use as their “proof” in the final energy audit. The idea is to obtain as much information about their school building so that they can find the best ways to conserve energy and money. No action will be taken and students’ hard work will not pay off unless the students communicate the information. The teachers will assist them in finding the appropriate audience for their presentation. Also, a partial energy audit report is better than no report at all. By the time you’ve audited your school and really thought about how to reduce your energy use, you will be as much of an expert on your building as almost anyone.
