HOW DO LENS’S HELP US SEE?. Aims  Revisit the idea that light can be bent (refracted).  Know how light bends in a convex (converging lens) and a concave.

Lenses and Mirrors P.O.E. Learning Target: I can demonstrate how convex and concave lenses and mirrors affect the images we see.

POE #1 Predict: How will shining a flash light through a concave lens change the way the light appears on the white board? Explain why you think this.   Observe: Record your observations. Explain: How did shining a flash light through a concave lens change how the light appeared on the white board.

POE #2 Predict: How will shining a flash light through a convex lens change the way the light appears on the white board? Explain why you think this.   Observe: Record your observations. Explain: How did shining a flash light through a convex lens change how the light appeared on the white board.

POE #3 Predict: How will looking through a concave lens change the way objects appear? Explain why you think this.   Observe: Look at an object through a concave lens. Record your observations. Explain: How did looking through a concave lens change the way objects appear? Explain why this happened.

POE #4 Predict: How will looking through a convex lens change the way objects appear? Explain why you think this.   Observe: Hold the convex lens about 30 cm or 1 foot from your eye and look at an object on your desk. Record your observations. Hold the convex lens at arm’s length from your eye and look at object across the room. Record your observations. Explain: Why did objects appear differently when you looked at objects close-up and far away.

POE #5 Predict: If you place a mirror perpendicularly on your paper, and look only at the mirror to write your name, what will you have to do differently to make you name appear correctly (left to right and right side up) on your paper.   Observe: In the space provided below, place your mirror perpendicularly on your paper and try to write your name correctly on your paper while only looking at the mirror.  Explain: When only looking at the mirror to write your name, what did you have to do differently to make your name appear correctly on your paper. Explain.
