Presentation transcript:

Regions and activities Globalisation, accessibility & knowledge society 40 key drivers within 7 themes 5 priorities

Key drivers Technologic (ICT convergence and changing transportations) Economic (Knowledge economy and changing transportations) Social (New ways of social interactions) Spatial and environmental (New urbanisation patterns) Transport (Increasing flows and environmental pressure) Territorial (Functional regions and cross border integration) Political (ICT and democracy, PPP and taxation)

Priority 1 ICT convergence (mobile phones, video & TV, Internet) will provide universal, just-in-time and user-friendly access to information, world-wide. - Gaps between regions? - Capacity to use and make value? - A demographic aspect? - Is this a regional/territorial question? - Is there a need for EU funds?

Priority 2 Youngsters will be more competent in more advanced technologies. The education system will become more open, and participatory. - Relation to ICT convergence? - Gaps between regions? - A demographic aspect? - Is this a regional/territorial question? - Is there a need for EU funds?

Priority 3 Regional impacts of globalisation - Relation between activities and territories? - Regional vulnerability and ways to handle it? - FDI and development of regions? - Added value for activities already located?

Priority 4 Most regions become functional metropolitan areas - Urban sprawl? - Land use, CORINE, Google Earth? - Impact on governance?

Priority 5 Importance of external borders and neighboring regions - EU borders East and South? - EU position in the world? - Evolution of functional border regions? - Studies outside the ESPON-countries? - EU, fortress or filter?

Other suggestions... EU policies redefined by territories (Coast, mountains, islands, rural areas, medium-size cities, large cities...). Reinforcement of cross-border regions. More individualistic and heterogeneous ways of living and working will emerge. Public spaces and facilities (e.g. Transportation terminals) will become fundamental assets for social inclusion.
