Digital Etiquette Crossing the Line

Crossing the Line What are some of the ways that you and your friends tease each other online for fun? i.e. Send jokes back and forth Alter photos of one another, in a goofy (not mean) way

Crossing the Line When does teasing “cross the line” become harmful? What are some signs of it being harmful, and what does it feel like to be in that situation? The teasing begins to feel scary, not funny anymore. You feel helpless. You feel like your reputation might suffer. You are worried about your safety.

Terms to Know…what to they Mean?? Harassing: Deceiving Flaming Hate speech

Define… Harassing: bombarding someone with messages over digital media, or repeated co0ntact when it is least expected Deceiving: using fake names, posing as someone else, or creating a fake profile about someone else Flaming: saying mean things usu. In ALL CAPS and often in a public forum with the intention to humiliate Hate speech: a verbal attach targeting someone because of their race, gender or religion, ability, etc..

Discuss….. Why would someone might not want to talk to other people about a cyberbullying situation?  What would the roadblocks be? Why? No Matter what label they put on a situation, if it makes them feel uncomfortable, upset or hurt, theySHOULD talk to someone about it

Movie We are going to watch a video of a teen reflecting on a cyberbullying experience. “Stacey’s Story – When Rumors Escalate.”

Video Questions?????? type up in a Word Document Why did the girls start to harass and threaten Stacey online in the 1st place? When do you think the girl’s behavior “crossed the line”? Stacey says, “People talk really big, when there’s like miles between you.” What do you think she means by this statement? In what ways might the online context make the situation worse than if the bully had harassed Stacey offline? Stacey’s mom says that Stacy should call the school and report the incidents. Stacey responds that it would just make it worse…Do you think that this is true? Why or Why not?

Case Study Analysis Read the Case study individually Talk about the case study with a partner Type up your answers Go over case studies as a class

Wrap Up… What does it feel like when a teasing situation “crosses the line” from harmless to harmful? What are some different forms of cyberbullying What advice would you give to someone who feels cyberbullied?
