Scientific Method – Steps 1-2 A logical and organized method to solve a problem or answer a question Problem - a question about the world Why is the sky blue? Why do leaves change colors in autumn? Background Information – conduct research from reliable sources

Scientific Method – Step 3 Hypothesis: testable statement - Put hypothesis in the “If-Then” format. - If _____ , then ______ will happen. Example: If the temperature of a cup of water is raised, then the amount of sugar that can be dissolved in it will be increased.

Scientific Method – Step 4 4) Experiment: Test hypothesis and collect data Independent variable – the one and only factor that is actually changed by the experimenter Dependent variable(s) – factor(s) that change due to the effect of the independent variable (measured) If the temperature of a cup of water is raised, then the amount of sugar that can be dissolved in it will be increased.

Scientific Method – Step 4 Other parts of the Experiment: Control –part experiment not exposed to the independent variable Used to compare results to Constants –factors that are kept the same for all parts of the experiment Types of Constants: Temperatures, Light, Food type

Scientific Method – Steps 5 & 6 Analysis– Look at trends, patterns, differences, or similarities Conclusion – Is hypothesis right or wrong? - Use DATA as evidence If hypothesis is wrong, what should you do? ….. proceed back to step 2 and try again
