Argument Writing Ingredients… pg. 36 Audience: Who will be reading this? Clear Introduction: Does it show a relevant issue? Claim: THESIS statement, usually a single sentence near the beginning of your paper that presents your argument to the reader Evidence: Relevant to support your claim/thesis statement Reasons: ties the evidence back to the claim Transition words: links evidence and reasons Conclusion: restate claim/thesis Grammar/sentences structure: Is everything written correctly with different types of sentences?

Pg. 37

What makes a claim effective or ineffective? EX 1: Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn is a great American novel. EX 2: In Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain develops a contrast between life on the river and life on the shore. It needs to be deeper than a simple opinion writing piece. Which one sounds like a topic you can argue vs. a statement that is an opinion?

CLAIM: In a fairy tale with an easily understood morality, the character of Cinderella is inherently good, while the stepsisters are evil. You are looking for the evidence! 1- You will cut and glue the claim statement to the top of your paper. 2- You will now choose the evidence that supports your claim statement, cut it out, and glue it underneath the claim.

Claim: Cupcakes taste the best when baking them with the right sEVEN ingredients. Evidence (AKA INGREDIENTS) FLOUR EGGS BAKING POWDER BAKING SODA SUGAR MILK ICING

NOW’S THE TRICKY PART! You must explain WHY the ingredients you chose supports your claim! EXAMPLE: Cupcakes taste the best when baking them with the right SEVEN ingredients.(CLAIM) Adding one cup of sugar is key. (EVIDENCE) The sugar allows the cupcake to have that mouthwatering sweetness that makes someone come back for another bite. (REASON/JUSTIFICATION)

YOUR TURN! Within your group, quickly discuss which FOUR ingredients you would choose to make “a delicious” spaghetti dish. (1 min.) MEAT TOMATO SAUCE GARLIC ONION ITALIAN SEASONINGS BREAD NOODLES

Cupcakes taste the best when baking them with the right SEVEN ingredients.(MY EXAMPLE) STATE YOUR CLIAM! Now, your group must come up with a CLAIM statement that you can all agree on. Remember, it’s more detailed than just your opinion; it’s something you will prove through your evidence and reasons/justifications. TASK MANAGER, keep everyone in line. WRITER, you need to write the claim statement on the piece of notebook paper. RUNNER, when your group is finished, you will grab the desired ingredients.

Everyone has a sticky note… Each person take an ingredient and place it in front of you. On your sticky note, you will write your name, and then a sentence that includes your evidence (or INGREDIENT). EX: Adding one cup of sugar is key. (EVIDENCE) You will then write your reason/justification that ties that piece of evidence (or INGREDIENT) back to the claim. EX: The sugar allows the cupcake to have that mouthwatering sweetness that makes someone come back for another bite. (REASON/JUSTIFICATION) Place your sticky note on the notebook paper.

turn to the back of page 36 (where your argument ingredients are) Everyone in your group will write the claim statement first. (DON’T FORGET TO INDENT!) Now, you will compile all of the evidence (OR INGREDIENTS) and reasons/justification into your first argument paragraph. **DON’T FORGET TO USE YOUR TRANSITION WORDS!
