Henri Matisse Henri Matisse was an artist who painted at the start of the 20th Century (over a hundred years ago). He liked to paint using bright and expressive colours. This style of painting was called Fauvism.

The Green Stripe, also known as Portrait of Madame Matisse. Notice the use of very simple stylised features and bright colours.

This is another portrait of his wife – Madame Matisse Once again we see that her facial features are very simple.
