Figure 1 Piezo1 mediates stretch-induced proliferation. Epithelial cell stretching induces opening of the stretch-activated calcium channel Piezo1. Calcium influx activates the calcium-sensitive kinase ERK1, which in turn causes cells that were in the G2 phase of the cell cycle to enter mitosis. Through this mechanism, epithelia react to stretching with a quick burst of cell divisions that counters the decrease in cell density.
