Progression of (in)Sanity Darl Progression of (in)Sanity

The beginning Look at Darl’s first chapter (pages 3-5) What patterns do you notice in this chapter? How is Darl’s frame of mind at this point in the novel? How do you know? How do Darl and Jewel approach the cottonhouse differently? “single file”, “straight as a plumb-line”, “four soft right angles”, “square with a broken roof set at a single”, “single file and five feet apart” What does this tell us about each of them?

Where it starts to change… Where does Darl’s mind start to show signs of confusion? With a partner, review Darl’s chapters: Where do we start to see a shift in his narration? Have text support to back up this shift.

Point of View How does the point of view shift as Darl’s state of mind starts to change? How does this shift affect the reader’s understanding of Darl? The whole family?

Darl’s Last Chapter Review Darl’s last chapter What state of mind is he in? How has his narrative changed? The book began with Darl but ends with Cash – what would be Faulkner’s purpose in making this shift in primary narrator? What significant differences do you notice between Darl’s narrative and Cash’s narrative?

Homework In your RJ: Write a 12 sentence paragraph, answering the following prompt: How does Faulkner use point of view to characterize Darl and illustrate Darl’s connections with the rest of his family?

For Tomorrow In the Prose Multiple Choice packet: Answer the questions for Heart of Darkness Set a time limit – 15 minutes Read the passage twice, annotating, BEFORE answering this questions Answer the questions for Macbeth Set a time limit – 13 minutes Read the questions first, then the passage
