Hydrodynamic Modeling of Lavaca Bay: through the use of GIS and Elcom SarahKelly Delavan Environmental and Water Resources Engineering
Outline: Backround-the where and the why Discussion of Elcom Previous work by Jordon Furnans New model created Conclusions and Future work
Lavaca Bay
Elcom Hydrodynamic modeling tool Takes wind, precipitation, shape of waterbody, tidal currents, etc. Gives us magnitude and direction of velocity of the water Flow across grid can Only move vertically and Horizontally-not diagonally.
Jordan Furnan’s Previous Work Acquired sounding data for the bay system from the National Geophysical Data Center. These points give x,y, and z coordinates for the depth of the bay system.
A grid was interpolated from the sounding data A clip of the grid using the shape of the Bay was created A few more adjustments in GIS Preparation of Elcom input files Elcom exported velocity data as Mat lab files
New Model Creation Diagonal flow direction with vertical/horizontal grid Rotation of both sounding data points and outline of Lavaca Bay With these two, we can create and Clip a grid
With a few more magical steps, we can now input the Grid into Elcom to obtain velocity results.
Conclusions and Future work A new model was created to address the problem with diagonal velocity direction This model is ready to be converted into input files to be analyzed by Elcom Comparison of old model and new model Incorporate into future research
