WHEN MUST A MOTORIST STOP? STOPPING REGULATIONS WHEN MUST A MOTORIST STOP?

When must a motorist stop? At an intersection with a stop sign Coming from a driveway or alley When a traffic officer orders the vehicle to stop Yield sign, and traffic does not permit a safe merge At an intersection with a yellow light Single white stop lines shows motorists where to stop

REGULATORY SIGNS Regulate or control the movement of traffic – GIVE COMMANDS OR SETS LIMITS Regulatory Signs are: RED, WHITE, BLACK, or GREEN ON WHITE

STOP SIGN Located at intersections Come to a complete stop at the first white line – white line, crosswalk, sidewalk, curb Proceed with caution. Always be prepared to yield even if you have the legal right of way

HIGH OCCUPANCY VEHICLE (HOV) – CARRY 2 OR MORE INDIVIDUALS

Lane Markings and Lane – Use Lights REVERSIBLE LANES: At different times of the day, traffic will travel in different directions GREEN ARROW – Lane is open for travel RED X – Never drive in a lane under a RED X signal YELLOW X – A steady YELLOW X indicates the driver should safely vacate this lane

TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNALS RED: STOP; (right turn on red after stop permitted in NJ) YELLOW: Do not enter the intersection GREEN: Proceed with caution

TRAFFIC CONTROL SIGNALS FLASHING RED: You must stop and proceed only when it is safe to do so (treat it as if it were a stop sign) FLASHING YELLOW: slow down and proceed with caution
