Schlieffen Plan and the Western Front

S TPS: Why should Germany be worried? BELGIUM RUSSIA ENGLAND GERMANY FRANCE

Germany’s Dilemma Germany was surrounded by enemies FRANCE GERMANY RUSSIA Germany was worried about having to fight enemies on two FRONTS (battlefields), which would weaken its army TPS: If you were Germany, would you attack France or Russia first? Why?

Germany’s Strategy Russia is huge and has less railroads, so it will take them longer to mobilize (get ready for war) France is a smaller country with a smaller army Belgium is neutral, so it has a small army

Schlieffen Plan Schlieffen Plan Germany will secretly attack France first by going through Belgium

Results Belgium and France both fight back  4 year war on “Western Front” England is furious that Germany attacked a neutral country  Declares war on Germany Russia is able to mobilize and attack Germany  3 year war on “Eastern Front
