Out-of-the-box SharePoint building blocks Sites Lists & Libraries (Apps) Pages Themes Search Web parts Site Columns Content Types Security management

External tools to build solutions SharePoint Designer InfoPath Access Visual Studio

Add functionality using 3rd party Apps SharePoint Marketplace

Our Focus today: Out-of-the-box functionality 3rd party Apps

Scenarios (for site owners)

Scenario Show me up to date information about a subject area on a page, but restrict it only to PDF files Possible solutions: Direct users to Advanced Search page to run their query Program a solution for it using Visual Studio Use a power user tool like SharePoint Designer to create your solution Configure out-of-the-box web parts to create your solution

Scenario Provide a place for users to submit expense reports created in Microsoft Word. Reports should be filter-able and sort-able by Department and Expense Possible solutions: The end user is responsible for filling out the metadata in columns After the expense report is uploaded to the library, a workflow runs to extract the needed information into columns Look for a 3rd party product that accomplishes this scenario Use Quick Parts in MS Word to surface doc data to columns

Scenario If an expense submitted is greater than $200, notify ‘the Boss’. Possible solutions: Manually email or call ‘the Boss’ when someone’s expense is over $200 Create notification workflow using Visual Studio Use SharePoint Designer workflow to check the amount and generate notification Use a 3rd party workflow App to check the amount and generate notification

Scenario Make available key information from documents in columns as metadata for easy sorting, filtering, creating views, facilitating search etc. Possible solutions: Enforce that all users set the metadata when they upload each document Assign a person to go through each document and manually extract each piece of relevant data Create a solution programmatically that extracts the information from documents Use a 3rd party Metadata extractor App to automatically extract the data

Scenario Show a location map right within the list or library. Possible solutions: Buy a web part from a Vendor that shows a map Create it from scratch using Visual Studio Use some nifty javascript to embed the map control on the page Use the out-of-the box new field type called Geolocation
