College and Career Readiness 1/18/2019

National College & Career Readiness Initiative The ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act) is NOT expected to be reauthorized and/or redesigned until after the 2012 election. No Child Left Behind’s AYP status in every state will be “in suspense” unless states have their own accountability system, approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

Georgia’s College & Career Readiness Initiative During 2010-2011, the Georgia Dept. of Education formed a College & Career Ready Performance Team (cross-departmental team) One Goal of the team: Better Communication with Counselors!! Another Goal: Performance Index Documents Georgia is developing its accountability plan to submit to the U.S. Dept. of Education: High School Performance Index ** (already vetted for a year) Middle School Performance Index (almost ready for vetting) Elementary School Performance Index (currently in development)

Georgia’s Proposed AYP Alternative Georgia’s College and Career Ready Performance Index Documents If State Board approves, will be presented as Georgia’s alternative to AYP More comprehensive look at what is really going on in Georgia’s Schools Indicators must align with increased graduation rate A decrease in the number of students entering USG schools needing remedial courses Less reliance on state assessments Curriculum mapped to career expectations to ensure relevancy Reality that not all students need a 4-year degree to have a successful career, but all need postsecondary programs and/or industry credentials Higher-order thinking skills emphasis An easily-understood roadmap for moving students from adequacy to excellence.
