Transformation Initiatives Citrus Academy CGA Transformation Portfolio BEE Bursary Support Skills Development Institutional Development / Social Facilitation Mentorship Extension Industry Exposure In 2000, the CGA changed its constitution to include transformation activities and appointed two emergent farmer directors The CGA transformation portfolio has four main focus areas. In 2006, the CGA launched a mentorship programme with financial support from the national department. 26 farmers in 4 provinces are currently receiving mentorship support. Responsibility for funding was transferred to provinces in 2010, agreements are still not in place, which puts the programme at risk. Citrus Research International, a subsidiary of the CGA, employs two extension officers dedicated to providing technical support to emergent farmers. One operates from Nelspruit and covers the northern parts of the country and one from Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape, covering the southern regions. Further development of and cooperation with government extension officers are needed. The CGA supports the institutional development of land restitution enterprises. The CGA has also recently signed an cooperation agreement with the Agri-Business Development Agency in KwaZulu-Natal, and hopes to extend this sort of cooperation to other provinces. The CGA further provides opportunities for emergent growers to take part in study tours and attend events, such as conferences and symposia, in order to provide them with exposure and a better understanding of the industry. In 2005, the Citrus Academy was establish to specifically address the skills development needs of growers. The Academy assists with skills development planning, develop learning tools and programmes – amongst other for extension officers – and provide funding for formal education through its Bursary Fund, which has a category that focuses exclusively on BEE enterprises.
