Pride & Prejudice Jane Austen

Pg. 23: Analyzing Literature Mr. Wickham's sole interest was money. Although Wickham was attracted to Elizabeth, he soon learned that her father's estate was entailed bringing him little fortune in a union. He quickly turned his attentions to Miss Mary King who had inherited a large some of money. 2. Lady Catherine de Bourgh is Mr. Darcy's aunt; she was his mother's sister. Lady Catherine is dictatorial and asks a lot of impertinent questions to Elizabeth because somehow she assumes that her nephew is interested in Elizabeth. Her treatment is rude and teasing.

Pg. 24 3. In Pride and Prejudice Colonel Fitzwilliam accidentally tells Elizabeth that Darcy was responsible for breaking up Mr. Bingley and Jane. Elizabeth is upset by this information. 4. When Darcy proposed Elizabeth and she refuses, these scenes show the first climax of the novel. As readers, we keep thinking about the reasons behind her denial.

5. Darcy's letter causes Elizabeth to reflect on the things she thinks about both him and Wickham. She comes to the conclusion that Wickham is untrustworthy and Darcy is not as bad as she had thought. Darcy further explains that he hoped to save his friend Bingley from heartbreak by convincing him that Bingley should leave Jane. Darcy did so only because he had incorrectly perceived that Jane was indifferent to Bingley. Elizabeth realizes that she has been generally much less able to understand the natures of people around her than she had thought, and in particular prejudiced against Darcy and in favor of Wickham. She knew and felt all along how silly her family were, the only two sensible ones that she looked up to was her father and Jane.
