Bell Ringer 63 In some states, unions can force you to join the union at a workplace. What is this form of union arrangement? (488) 25 states in the U.S. have passed “right to work laws”. What do those laws prevent? (488)

Labor Unions organized associations of workers, often in a trade or profession, formed to protect and further the rights and interests of workers, such as safer working conditions, vacation time, shorter work weeks, bonuses, healthcare, maternity leave and higher pay.

The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (FLSA) introduced the forty-hour workweek, established a national minimum wage, guaranteed "time-and-a-half" for overtime in certain jobs, and prohibited most employment of minors in "oppressive child labor“.

A Right to Work law ensures that no one is forced to pay tribute to a union in order to get or keep a job. The National Right to Work Committee supports the enactment of additional state right to work laws until the federal sanction for compulsory unionism is eliminated. There are currently 25 Right to Work states. Copyright 2015, National Right to Work Committee®
