Mitosis and the Cell Cycle Division of the nucleus and the nuclear material (DNA), as well as the cell.
The cell cycle Mitosis is only one section of the life cycle of a cell. Interphase is the main part of the cell cycle. This is where DNA is replicated.

Mitosis

The Cell CYCLE consists of Interphase and MITOSIS (division of the nucleus). Most of the time the cell is in INTERPHASE as the cell prepares for division.

C M G2 S G1

INTERPHASE The cell’s chemical machine operates and the cell grows (G1 phase). The SYNTHESIS of DNA (S phase). PREPARE for cell division

MITOSIS Chromatin vs. Chromosomes 1. The chromatin CONDENSES (shortens) into chromosomes. Chromatin vs. Chromosomes Long/thin Invisible Active Working cell Short/thick Visible Inactive Dividing cell

The nuclear membrane and nucleolus DISAPPEAR. Centrioles move apart to opposite ends of the cell. SPINDLE fibers from the centrioles attach to centromeres.

Chromosomes

1. Chromosomes line up on the EQUATOR of the cell. Metaphase 1. Chromosomes line up on the EQUATOR of the cell.

Chromosomes are PULLED to the ends of the cell. Anaphase Centromere SPLITS. Chromosomes are PULLED to the ends of the cell.

Telophase Chromosomes ARE AT the ends of the cell. Chromosomes DECONDENSE (lengthen) to form chromatin. The nuclear membrane and nucleolus REAPPEAR. The centrioles SEPARATE. The CYTOPLASM is divided. (Cytokinesis)
