Take Notes: SSIN Page 15

5 Themes of Geography Place Location Region Movement Human-Environment Interactions We will start with place but the order does not matter.

www.Googlemaps.com Google Maps Put in a place on the maps and have students describe the place based on the pictures alone.

Have them begin to guess where they think it is located Have them begin to guess where they think it is located? Ask students why they guessed those parts of the world? What hints do the images provide? What would make the image more helpful in determining where it is in the world? What do you think it would be like to live there?

New Dehli

1. Place The mix of human and non-human features at a given location. What a location is like. Ex: Boise is hilly and dry or Boise has a state capitol building downtown where many people work.

2. Location Where a place is Two ways to talk about location 1.Absolute location 2. Relative location Geographers can study a place by its location or where it is on the Earth. We are located in Boise, Idaho. More specifically we are located at St. Mark’s school in classroom 7B.

Absolute Location A place’s EXACT location on Earth in terms of latitude and longitude. Ex: 38o 54’ N, 77o 2’ W When we start talking very specifically about a location with coordinates, it is referred to the “absolute location”

The location of a place relative to another place. Relative Location The location of a place relative to another place. It requires two locations to describe a place Ex: Washington DC. Is 200 miles SW of NYC

Go to www.googlemaps.com 1. Type in any city of your choice 2. Look up the exact latitude and longitude coordinates of this location. 3. Write them down in your notes 4. research what type of place it is and discuss with your partner if you would like to visit or live there.

If you want to figure out the nearest airport to a town, would absolute or relative location be most useful? Explain. Answer: Relative location, it would show the town’s distance to the nearest airport. Think /Pair/Share

Key Prompt: Page 19 of SSIN Describe yourself in various ways, such as by gender, age, birthplace, hobbies, and favorite food etc.

Take Notes on page 19 SSIN

3. Human-Environment Interaction How people affect their environment and how the environment affects them.

Add more pictures

4. Region Area with at least one unifying physical or human feature Ex: climate, population, landforms, In some parts of the word, a common language or ethnic background defines a region.

5. Movement How people, goods and ideas get from one place to another. How have the advancement of technology and roads and other infrastructure affect a place? We get a daily supply of food, supplies, fuel and other goods into Boise. We also get a lot of visitors during the winter and summer months for camping and skiing.
