ENCOURAGING INDEPENDENCE How It Works: To support independent learning, get students to follow the “Three Before Me” rule. If they are stuck, encourage them to use their BRAINS first. (Or a partners Brain?) If this does not work, consult their BOOKS. If this does not work, ask a BUDDY. And finally, if all else fails ask the BOSS – the teacher or other adult!

ABC Feedback! B= BUILD UPON-Try and build upon your peer’s answer. During classroom discussion, what to do if you are asked to give some “ABC feedback” A= AGREE WITH-Explain how you agree with your peer’s answer. B= BUILD UPON-Try and build upon your peer’s answer. C= CHALLENGE-Try and disagree with your peer’s answer, offer an alternative point of view.

Instructions: Take a chair and identify it as “the hot seat Instructions: Take a chair and identify it as “the hot seat.” Set a timer for any length of time (e.g. something like 2 or 3 minutes should be plenty) and ask each person to take a turn on the hot seat. Once they are seated, the timer begins and people may ask the seated person any question in rapid-fire succession.
