Course Overview This graduate level course analyzes the current and future technologies for automotive prime movers. The primary focus of the course is on the teaching of thermodynamic and environmental principles of prime movers. The course provides information that will enable the engineering analysis of Current Internal Combustion Engines Future Internal Combustion Engines Electric Prime Movers Hydraulic Prime Movers Hybrid Prime Mover Systems

Course Objectives Students successfully completing MEL 721 will get to know: Present status of prime movers in automobile industry. Near future and long term developments in Internal Combustion Engines as automotive prime movers. Design and development of Electric prime mover. Detailed analysis of Hybrid Electric and Hybrid Hydraulic Systems. Performance of automotive prime movers in urban, extra-urban and highway traffic conditions.

Course Contents UNIT- I: Current Status & Overview of Next Generation Prime Movers.    UNIT- II: Analysis of Advanced Spark Ignition Engines. UNIT –III: Analysis of Advanced Compressions Ignition Engines. UNIT –IV: Electric Prime Movers for Automobiles. UNIT –V: Hybrid Electric Prime Movers . UNIT –VI: Hybrid Hydraulic Prime Movers.
