Facts About India's Literacy What percent of people in India live in poverty? 25% of the Indian people live in poverty This means that 1 out of 4 people are poor These two are linked because if someone is illiterate they are more likely to live in poverty What is India's rank in the world for literacy rate? India is ranked 137 out of 183 countries

India's Illiteracy Problem The literacy rate for men is 73.4%, while the literacy rate for women is 47.8% In rural areas, more than 50% of women and children are illiterate India's literacy rate is the lowest among BRIC nations
