1. Declaration of Independence was written in 1776 for what purpose? To declare independence and explain why the colonists were forced into it. 2. Quartering Act was an indirect tax because colonists were required to house the soldiers and feed them. The Stamp Act was a direct tax because it taxed the colonists and colonists believed they were taxed without representation. The Intolerable Acts were not a tax at all but rather to punish the colonists.
