Presentation transcript:

Poverty and Social Exclusion In 2016, 17.3 % of the EU population earned less than the poverty threshold, which is set at 60 % of the national median equivalised disposable income in the country in which they live. This represents a slight increase compared with 2010, when 16.5 % fell below this threshold. Eurostat Séamus Bolland EESC

With more than 120 million people in the EU at risk of poverty or social exclusion, EU leaders pledged to bring at least 20 million people out of poverty and social exclusion by 2020. The fight against poverty and social exclusion was at the heart of the Europe 2020 strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth. It Failed Séamus Bolland EESC

Children 24% of all the EU population (over 120 million people), are at risk of poverty or social exclusion – this includes 27% of all children in Europe, 20.5% of those over 65, and 9% of those with a job Séamus Bolland EESC

Statistics Close to 9% of all Europeans live in severe material deprivation - they do not have the resources to own a washing machine, a car, a telephone, to heat their homes or face unexpected expenses 17% of Europeans live on less than 60% of their country's average household income 10% of Europeans live in households where no one has a job Séamus Bolland EESC
