The primary language is Spanish and twenty-one Mayan dialects are spoken. The country is about the size of the State of Virginia, and a little bigger than Ireland. Guatemala is the next country south of Mexico and with a population of 14 million people, it is the second most densely populated country in Central America. 43% of children under five are malnourished. This is one of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. More than half of the population is below the national poverty line and 15% live in extreme poverty (less than $1 per day). The number of homes without power is about 500,000. That's millions of people in the dark after sundown which happens at about 6pm.

What is a Sponsorship Cluster? 11 of 17 A Sponsorship Cluster is a group of people who come together to support one or more of our projects here in Guatemala. A Sponsorship Cluster can: Sponsor a child here in Guatemala for $35 Sponsor an entire family for $140 Donate a Portable Solar Lighting Unit to a family who is currently living by candlelight for $235 There can be as few as 2 people and as many as 20 people in a sponsorship cluster. Even a $1 dollar donation per week, per person can make a big difference to the kids and families here in Guatemala

For example: 12 of 17 This is Katy from Guatemala. She is 13. She and her brother were abandoned by their mom when she was only 6 years-old. With the help of Jessica Roemisher, Natalie Stafford and 6 other people, Katy is being helped by a Sponsorship Cluster in Worthington, Massachusetts. Here is part of a letter from her sponsorship cluster:

How you can help: 13 of 17 This is a photo we took in an area where we work here in Guatemala. This little boy is carrying wood not because he has to, but because his parents do not yet see the value of education. This is quite common here in Guatemala. With your sponsorship, other kids just like him can have the opportunity to go to school. Your support allows us not only to educate the parents, but also to show the kids that school is a cool thing!

Whos in need today: 14 of 17 Here are just a few photos of kids who need your help. You can see more photos and read some of their stories by clicking this link: Paco & Maribel Zaida Mirza Maurico & Flor Jose
