Unit II: Biological Bases of Behavior Modules 9-14

9-1 Explain why psychologists are concerned with human biology. “Everything psychological is simultaneously biological!” Trephination Phrenology (Gall)

Biological Psychology AKA: behavioral neuroscientists, neuropsychologists, behavior geneticists, bio-psychologists, or physiological psychologists… (& a few others…) Micro to Macro…. Nerve cell to brain parts to biopsychosocial systems

9-2 Describe the parts of the neuron, and explain how its impulses are generated. Nodes of Ranvier = spaces between myelin sheaths Multiple sclerosis & Guillain-Barre syndrome are related to degeneration of the myelin sheathing…

Toilet Example…

Sodium-Potassium Pump System

9-3 Describe how nerve cells communicate with other nerve cells.

9-4 Describe how neurotransmitters influence behavior, and explain how drugs and other chemicals affect neurotransmitters.

Agonist vs Antagonist

Neural Activity
