Road to voting rights Makenzie Hellyer

Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) * The supreme court decision was a decision upholding the constitutionality of state laws requiring racial segregation in public facilities under the doctrine of “separate but equal.” * Plessy legitimized the state laws establishing racial segregation in the south, and provided an impetus for further segregation laws.

Brown v. Board of Education (1954) * The supreme court declared state laws establishing public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. * Segregated public schools faced “massive resistance” across the south, the ruling provided irresistible moral authority to the drive for legal equality. * There were many protests, because white people didn’t want there kids to go to school with black kids.

Billy Graham * An American evangelical Christian evangelist, ordained as a Southern Baptist minister. * Bailed Martin Luther King Jr. out of jail. * He allowed African American minister Thomas Kilgore to serve as a member of his New York Crusade’s executive committee.

24th Amendment * Was passed January 23, 1964 * Prohibits any poll taxes in elections for federal officials.
