Investigating how Concentration Effects the Rate of Reaction OBJECTIVES Carry out experiments safely Find out what happens to rates of reactions when concentration is increased Explain results scientifically

Apparatus and Chemicals Boiling tube Test tube rack Ruler Stopwatch Measuring cylinder Scissors Boiling tube Sulphuric acid Magnesium

Method Set up the equipment as shown in the diagram Add 10cm3 of sulphuric acid. Time how long it takes for 5cm of magnesium ribbon to disappear. Repeat with the following amounts of water and acid; 10cm3 of acid. 8cm3 of acid + 2cm3 water 6cm3 of acid + 4cm3 water 4cm3 of acid + 6cm3 water 2cm3 of acid + 8cm3 water

Time for 5cm of Mg ribbon to disappear (s) Results Table Volume of acid (cm3) Volume of water (cm3) Time for 5cm of Mg ribbon to disappear (s) 10 8 2 6 4

Graph Time for magnesium ribbon to disappear (s) Volume of acid (cm3)

Conclusion When the concentration of the acid is high (lots of acid) the hydrogen is made ________. When the concentration of acid is low (lots of water) the hydrogen is made ________ QUICKLY SLOWLY

The rate is ______ when the _______________ is high because there are lots of _____ particles available to react with the metal. The rate is _____ when the _______________ is low because there are not many _____ particles available to react with the metal. FAST CONCENTRATION ACID SLOW CONCENTRATION ACID
