Teach Students to Self-Assess and Reflect for deeper learning Starr Sackstein, NBCT @MsSackstein on Twitter mssackstein@gmail.com

What is reflection to you? Consider the ways you do it or teach students to do it. Talk to a neighbor for a minute https://helleslittlesecrets.files.wordpress.com/2015/06/reflecting-on-the-week.jpg?w=810

What is reflection? Reflection is the act of looking back upon learning and self-assessing against the standards. It’s an opportunity to explore what students know and can do, in their own words http://www.public-domain-image.com/free-images/nature-landscapes/lake/reflecting-pond-725x544.jpg

Where does reflection fit into your classroom or school? https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/be/Flower_reflection.jpg

When and Where to use reflection... at the beginning of a unit or semester to set goals at the end of each assignment at the end of the unit at the end of a semester at the end of the year http://img05.deviantart.net/09c0/i/2009/291/3/7/reflection_r2_stock_image_by_lemnosexplorer.jpg

What are key elements of a reflection? https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/30/51755512_21cedbe2e7.jpg

What to include in a reflection: the student’s understanding of the task the process of completion the standards evidence of learning from student work challenges self-assessment goals/implementation of feedback https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/02/Salton_Sea_Reflection.jpg

How do you write a reflection? http://cf.ltkcdn.net/freelance-writing/images/feat-lg/33537-280x190r1-iStock_000008997629Small.jpg

How to write a reflection… in steps In essay form, the students should start all essays rewording what they were asked to do. Remind students not to cut and paste from the assignment sheet, but rather paraphrase the expectation in their own words.

Scaffolding Reflection To reflect age, level and readiness of students. To support ELLs and other populations high need student groups

Introductory paragraph in reflection The student explains what the assignment asked him to do. This is one way to do it.

It’s about the process Next students should write about HOW they accomplished the task. What steps were taken specifically? What challenges were faced? How did they overcome these challenges? What did they learn? http://www.publicdomaintreasurehunter.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/earn-money-using-public-domain-content.jpg

How do you teach students about the standards?

Adding standards to the reflection What did they learn? It’s not enough to just say they did something, now they must show how they learned and are meeting standards. For each standard, they should use evidence from their actual assignment.

How can you help students improve reflections? Get them to move beyond whether or not they liked an assignment or how no one in their group did any work. Provide specific feedback to help them improve… perhaps start with a google form before going to essay style reflections for differentiation purposes

Take some time to reflect on your conference learning What have you learned? How do you know? Write for a few minutes and share with a partner - consider the goals for being here when you write.
