ARPAS Mission Statement: The American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS) provides certification of animal scientists through examination, continuing education, and commitment to a code of ethics, and disseminates applied scientific information through publication of the peer-reviewed journal The Professional Animal Scientist.

ARPAS Vision Statement: To be recognized as a source for certified professional animal scientists to serve animal producers, industry, and all others desiring research-based technical information on the animal sciences.

ARPAS Affiliations ARPAS is affiliated with five professional societies: American Dairy Science Association American Meat Science Association American Society of Animal Science Equine Science Society Poultry Science Association

Why was ARPAS established? To register professionally competent Animal Scientists To provide a mechanism to sustain their professional competence To enhance their professional stature and credibility To strengthen and promote the profession of the animal sciences To adhere to a code of ethics To provide a means for those in industry, companies, and consulting to establish and maintain professional recognition

Categories of Certification Professional Animal Scientist (PAS)—based on degree, experience, examination, and CEUs Registered Animal Specialist (RAS) and Registered Animal Product Specialist (RAPS)—based on experience, examination, and CEUs Board Certification (Diplomate)—highest requirements; available to professionals with an MS or PhD degree who qualify and can benefit from the highest level of certification

PAS or RAS/RAPS registration PAS and RAS/RAPS registration can be in one or more of the following species/product areas: Poultry Sheep Goats Swine Meat Science Dairy Product Science Poultry Products Aquaculture Beef Cattle Companion Animals Dairy Cattle Feed Management Horses Laboratory Animals Nutrition

ARPAS CEUs ARPAS reviews programs and approves events that qualify for continuing education units (CEUs) 16 CEUs of appropriate education are required annually to insure that members stay current in their field

Board Certification The American College of Animal Sciences (ACAS) provides for Board Certification in a specific discipline college of animal science. The Discipline colleges are: Applied Animal Behavior Animal Food Science Animal Breeding and Genetics Animal Nutrition Animal Physiology Animal Welfare Science

Why join ARPAS? Provides professional credibility and credentials for animal scientists Documents know-how to apply relevant cutting-edge knowledge to real-world problems Brings recognition of abilities and knowledge to those being served Provides opportunities to stay current in your field

Recent ARPAS Activities 2016-2021 Strategic Plan – survey, review, plan Founding member of PAACO (Professional Animal Auditors Certification Organization) MOU with NRCS - Feed Management MOU with Nigerian Animal Science Formation of three new chapters: Midwest, Northeast & South-Central Animal Welfare Science– established a new board discipline ARPAS Foundation

ARPAS Chapters and Activities California: conducts a symposium at Harris Ranch in the fall, scholarships for students, raised money and conducted two research projects Colorado/Wyo/Neb: two meetings and educational programs each year Washington DC: two meetings and programs, banquet after spring meeting Northeast: new in 2011, currently meeting at the Penn. State Dairy Nutr. Conf.

Chapters and Activities (cont.) Pacific NW: student travel scholarships; chapter meeting with Pacific NW Nutr. Conf. Southern Great Plains: spring meeting with Plains Nutrition Council; co-sponsored Feed Management Program in the fall. South Central- two meetings, one with So. Section ASAS in the Spring and one at another location in the Fall. Midwest Chapter: new in 2011; meetings at Tri-State DNC, 4-State DNC, Minnesota Nutrition Conference and Midwest ASAS/ADSA; sponsored a speaker at meetings and a student presentation competition

The ARPAS Foundation Founded in 2007 as a nonprofit entity Purpose: To sponsor educational programs for members and pay for ARPAS exams for students Governed by a foundation board with input from ARPAS members. The board oversees fund raising, evaluates proposed activities, and provides guidance for education programs. Current assets of $175,000. Only earnings are used to fund activities such as chapter support, education meetings and membership and member development activities.

Distinguished Professional Animal Scientist Award Retired and previous ARPAS leader with a distinguished career as an Animal Scientist We have honored 24 of out emeritus members since inception of the award in 2008 Approximately 3/year (0.3% of membership) Our 201 awardees were: Dr. Lee Shell-past president and past secretary of ARPAS Dr. Jerry Poley-past officer position with the Washington DC Chapter
