Figure 1 Oligodendrocytes Sound the Alarm upon CNS Injury In a model based on Gadani et al., spinal cord contusion injury promotes IL-33 release from oligodendrocytes. Other as-yet-to-be identified factors are also released and increase astrocyte expression of St2 (IL-33R) and decrease its expression in microglia. Newly released IL-33 stimulates astrocytes to promote monocyte chemotaxis through the CCL2-CCR2 axis. Diverse factors, including IL-33, skew these invading macrophages to adopt a M2 polarized state that then promotes injury recovery.
