Top Ten Tips for Success Utilize HCC’s free student resources Complete your assignments Purchase required materials Prioritize your academic work Know yourself Tip 10: Discover HCC’s FREE student resources Academic Support Center and Student Services Center (CCB 1012) Take advantage of resources offering the greatest potential benefit Tip 9: Complete Your Assignments Complete all assigned work on time (readings and daily work as well as major papers and projects) Use assignment sheets when they are provided Tip 8: Purchase Required Materials Buy texts and other required materials (flash drives, calculators, paper) Bring them to class! Tip 7: Prioritize Your Academic Work Keep your goals and priorities in mind (Tip 6) Include adequate study time (Tip 5) Use the BDA framework Follow your weekly schedule, refining it as needed Tip 6: Know Yourself Reflect upon these questions to determine what motivates you; motivation is a key factor in being successful -Why am I in college -What might I gain by studying X, y, z? -What is the relevance of studying

Top Ten Tips for Success Organize your time Know your syllabus Build relationships Attend classes Develop productive attitudes Toward your instructor and other students Toward learning Tip 5: Organize Your Time Long-term planning ---Construct your schedule to help you stay abreast of assignments ---Helps avoid scheduling nightmares Short-term planning ---Helps you feel accomplishment and avoid cramming ---Helps you distribute study time throughout the week Tip 4: Know Your Syllabus: read it , keep it, review it regularly Tip 3: Build Relationships With instructors: inside class, ask questions; outside class, office hours With academic advisors and tutors With other students (one of your best resources) Tip 2: Attend classes: Attend regularly Arrive punctually and stay the whole time Tip 1: Develop Productive Attitudes Toward instructor and other students ---Treat them maturely and with respect ---Avoid distracting behaviors during class Toward learning ---Learning is Your responsibility ---Be honest and tell the truth; accept consequences of your actions ---Find personal relevance (Tip 6) ---Think critically—don’t just memorize!!
