Presentation transcript:

I know I have learned it when I can... Target: To understand how the GEOGRAPHY of Africa affected the development of trade and kingdoms across a large continent  I know I have learned it when I can... *Name three out of the 4 Climate Zones in Africa *Define Savanna & Plateau *Identify the Nile River and Niger River as major waterways where towns and villages developed * Explain in one sentence how the Trans-Saharan Trade developed

Climate Zone 1: Rainforest * The Equator slices through the middle of Africa. *Rainforests make up 10% of Africa's land area. *Heavy rainfall and warm climate all year * Farmers need to clear much of the forested land in this climate zone to grow crops

*Savannas are tropical grasslands with small plants and trees *Savannas cover about 40% of Africa's land area *High temperatures and uneven rain.  *Enough rainfall to grow grains and heard cattle  Climate Zone 2: Savanna

Climate Zone 3: Desert *40% of Africa's land area is desert *The Sahara Desert is the world's largest HOT desert that stretches across North Africa (Antarctica and Artic largest COLD deserts!) *The Kalahari Desert lies in Southwestern Africa *one of the driest and hottest regions of the world * 1-4 inches of rain annually *very little sand, but mostly hard, rocky plateaus (area of high, flat land)

Climate Zone 4: Mediterranean Very mild climate- two seasons- summer and winter  Ocean currents of the Mediterranean Sea keep summer temperatures around 72 degrees and winter around 30-65 degrees Dry climate with most rain in winter This zone found along northern coast and southern tip of Africa Fertile land with abundant crops

Trans-Saharan Trade  *The Sahara Desert kept most of North Africa isolated from the rest of the Continent *Trade developed when the Romans introduced the camel which are well suited for desert travel *Traders formed camel caravans which brought trade between North and West Africa- gold, salt, ivory, spices, leather *Trade also brought the Christian and Muslim world in contact with Africa
