10 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PLAYERS COMPETING WHEN FACED WITH ADVERSITY “LIFE IS 10% WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU, AND 90% HOW YOU REACT TO IT” CHARLES SWINDOLL

THE KEY TO HELPING YOUR PLAYERS CONTINUE TO COMPETE WHEN FACED WITH ADVERSITY IS TO MENTALLY MOVE THEM FROM FOCUSING ON THE PROBLEM TO FOCUSING ON THE SOLUTION

VIEW ADVERSITY AS TEMPORARY, LOCALIZED AND CORRECTABLE MENTALLY TOUGH PLAYERS BELIEVE THAT THEIR SCORING HAS BEEN OFF LATELY BUT THEY ARE DUE FOR THE NEXT GAME (TEMPORARY), THEY HAVE STRUGGLED ONLY BECAUSE THEY ARE AIMING THEIR SHOTS TOO MUCH (LOCALIZED), AND IF THEY JUST GET PUCKS TO THE NET THEY WILL GET BACK ON TRACK (CORRECTABLE).

VIEW ADVERSITY AS AN OPPORTUNITY OR CHALLENGE FRAME IT AS POSITIVE OPPORTUNITY OR CHALLENGE , RATHER THAT NEGATIVE THREAT GREAT PLAYERS CREATE CHALLENGES OUT OF ADVERSITY INSTEAD OF BEING THREATENED BY IT

CONTROL THE CONTROLLABLES FOCUS ON THAT WHICH YOU CAN CONTROL – NAMELY THEIR REACTIONS, FOCUS, CONFIDENCE AND ATTITUDE ALLOWS THEM TO STAY CALM AS THEY FIGURE OUT THE BEST WAY TO OVERCOME THE ADVERSITY CAUSE OF ADVERSITY USUALLY OUTSIDE OF THE PLAYERS CONTROL ANYWAY

TAKE IT ONE AT A TIME PLAY IN THE PRESENT MOMENT (LET GO THE PAST, NO WORRYING ABOUT THE FUTURE) KEEPS GAME MORE MANAGEABLE FOR YOUR PLAYERS CAN’T CHANGE THE PAST, CAN ALWAYS DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE PRESENT

PERSIST TYPICALLY, LOSERS DIDN’T KNOW HOW CLOSE THEY WERE TO SUCCESS WHEN THEY GAVE UP GIVING UP IS A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO A TEMPORARY PROBLEM AND GIVES YOUR PLAYERS ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE OF BEING SUCCESSFUL

TRY SMARTER INSTEAD OF ALWAYS TRYING HARDER WHEN STRUGGLING, GET THEM TO TAKE A STEP BACK AND ASSESS THEIR APPROACH BY ANALYZING THE SITUATION, THIS LEADS TO DISCOVERY OF AN EASIER OR MORE EFFECTIVE WAY OF DOING THINGS GET THEM TO MAKE AN ADJUSTMENT TO A SMARTER PHYSICAL OR MENTAL STRATEGY AND THEY WILL LEARN TO MONITOR AND CORRECT THEMSELVES

BE PATIENT AND TRUST YOUR PLAN TOO MANY PLAYERS SECOND GUESS THEMSELVES FOLLOWING ADVERSITY RATHER THAN CHOOSING TO BE PATIENT AND TRUSTING THEIR PLAN WHEN IT IS THE CORRECT ONE

USE THE ANGER/FRUSTRATION TO YOUR ADVANTAGE ENCOURAGE YOU PLAYERS TO USE THE ANGER AND FRUSTRATION ASSOCIATED WITH ADVERSITY BY CHANNELING IT TO MOTIVATE AND FOCUS THEM EVEN MORE TOO MANY PLAYERS TURN THE ANGER INWARDS TO DESTROY THEMSELVES RATHER THAN TAKING ADVANTAGE OF IT

ENDURE IT TOGETHER REMIND YOUR TEAM THAT ENDURING THE ADVERSITY TOGETHER WILL DIVIDE THE PROBLEM AND MULTIPLY YOUR RESOURCES, ULTIMATELY MAKING YOU A STRONGER TEAM

LEARN LESSONS FROM MISTAKES RATHER THAN DWELLING ON MISTAKES AND PROBLEMS, HELP YOUR PLAYERS TRANSFORM THEM INTO FUTURE SUCCESSES BY LEARNING LESSONS FROM THEM “FAILURE IS THE OPPORTUNITY TO BEGIN AGAIN MORE INTELLIGENTLY” HENRY FORD

FACING ADVERSITY
