Communication and Social Styles What I learned…

Communication is Important: Communication is an essential tool for us to use in order to understand one another. Miscommunication can cause stress, conflict and misunderstanding. Effective communication = Good Relationships Two-way process of sending and receiving Used to try to accomplish four things: To be understood To Understand others To be accepted To get something accomplished

Factors Influencing Communication: Context Interpretation Feedback Barriers Semantics Jargon Acronyms

Active Listening Internalize speakers feelings See from their perspective Use meaning and feeling to understand point of view

Verbal Communication: The words we hear The words we say Non-Verbal Communication: What we see What our body “says” to others

Perception and Communication We must communicate to get work done Communication is a mutually influencing process Our “reality” effects what we see/hear and how we respond Perception and Communication Mixed Messages: Speakers word’s say one thing, nonverbals say another Attach greater meaning to nonverbals (In these situations it is best to ask for clarification to reframe the conversation) Nonverbal Feedback: The listener’s nonverbals are as powerful as speakers, so Pay attention Face the speaker Make good eye contact
