Presentation transcript:

What happens when an acid reacts with a metal carbonate? WALT: Predict the products formed when different acids react with metal carbonates

+ a gas that you will find out Salt + Water Examples of metal carbonates are copper carbonate and calcium carbonate + a gas that you will find out Salt + Water

React copper carbonate and sulphuric acid Write a prediction of the name of the salt that you think will be formed Write a prediction of the gas that you think will be formed (remember you have reacted marble chips (calcium carbonate) and acid twice before).

When finished…. Draw a diagram Write a method Write some observations about what happened Write out the equation for the reaction Complete the following equations: Sodium carbonate + hydrochloric acid Calcium carbonate + hydrochloric acid Magnesium carbonate + nitric acid

Sherbert The fizz produced in sherbet is a reaction between a food acid and a carbonate. The ingredients dissolve in your mouth and react with each other producing the carbon dioxide fizz.
