Training kiwifruit vines

Kiwifruit can be supported on T bar frames

Pergola frames are also used Pergola frames are also used. These give a complete canopy with the fruit hanging down underneath The fruit are harvested easily by walking underneath the vines

Manipulation of training methods The adapted canopy trains the new canes to grow above the fruit bearing canes. This allows more light to enter the fruit producing canopy The fruit ripen earlier by increased photosynthesis building up more sugar and making the fruit sweeter earlier

Kiwifruit manipulations In the winter the vines are pruned. The old fruit bearing wood is cut back and new canes trimmed and tied back onto the wires This prepares the vines for the next years growth Fruit is produced on horisontal canes. If they are tied down it encourages flower and fruit development

Training is used for: To control the vine growth To encourage light into the vines and stimulate photosynthesis and sugar production To encourage pollination by exposing the flowers To ensure sprays cover all the vines and reach the fruit when necessary Allow air movement around the vines which reduces spore settlement diseases developing Makes harvesting easier
