Lies Your Mother Told You You need to put some hydrogen peroxide on that. Cracking your knuckles will give you arthritis. Don’t swallow your gum because it takes…
What if… …we’ve accepted things with much more significant implications?
Jesus (paraphrased) You’ve heard it said like this, but I’m going to tell you something different. I know you’ve been taught to look at it this way; I’m going to give you a new way to look at it.
Follow Jesus… … you have your act together; … you keep up your appearances; … you follow all the right rules; … you keep the rituals.
Jesus (paraphrased) “Look, I know you’ve been taught that it’s what’s on the outside. But that’s not what it’s about. It’s what’s on the inside, and then what’s on the inside comes out. It’s an inside-out way of following God.”
1 Samuel 16:7 The LORD doesn't see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart. “Look, man may look on the outside, but I look at the heart.”
Broken to be Whole Humbled to be Exalted Emptied to be Filled Jesus turns some things upside down, inside out Broken to be Whole Humbled to be Exalted Emptied to be Filled
Instead of… …looking like you have it all together, Jesus wants authentic worship. …carefully observing all these religious rituals, Jesus wants an intimate relationship. …acting more righteous than you really are, Jesus wants brokenness.
brokenness
When Jesus looks at broken he sees beautiful
William McDonald, “Lord, Break Me” Usually when someone is broken, when something is broken, its value declines. It disappears altogether. So broken dishes & broken bottles & broken mirrors are generally scrapped. They’re thrown out. Even a crack in the furniture or a tear in the cloth greatly reduces its resale value. But this isn’t the way things work in the spiritual realm. In the world we know, if something breaks, the value goes down. But God puts a premium on broken things, especially broken people.

Jeremiah 18:1-5 This is the word that came to me from the Lord: “Go down at once to the potter’s house, and there I will reveal my words to you.”
Jeremiah 18:1-5 So, I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working away at the wheel. But the jar that he was making from the clay became flawed in the potter’s hands, so he made it into another jar, as seemed right for him to do.
Jeremiah 18:1-5 Then the word of the Lord came to me. “House of Israel, can I not treat you as this potter treats his clay?”
