CONNECTED CHURCH LAMB, Bangladesh

ENRICHING THE SOIL June 2016

What is your specialist skill? Notes to leader: This is a question to get everyone engaged with the story. You could ask them to talk in pairs and then feedback an answer. Then say: ‘Well today we’re going to meet someone whose specialist skill is making compost!’

Lucal Hembrom lives in North West Bangladesh, in a small village Lucal Hembrom lives in North West Bangladesh, in a small village. He is a farmer but it is hard for him to grow good crops because it doesn’t rain enough where he lives. Notes to leader: You might know Bangladesh for its floods, but there are also areas that are increasingly prone to drought.

‘Lucal met some people from Tearfund partner LAMB. They explained to him that the expensive chemical fertiliser he was using was very bad for the soil. It was making conditions worse for his plants, not better!’

They showed him how to make an organic, cheap fertiliser using worms and plant waste. He was really impressed with how it worked. His plants grew better, and they didn’t need as much water.

‘Lucal has taught three of his neighbours how to make the fertiliser. Now all of their crops are growing better. They are also saving money as they no longer have to buy the expensive fertiliser!’ Picture: one of his neighbours using the new fertiliser

PRAYER Thank God for Lucal’s enthusiasm for this project, and ask that he will continue to share this good news with his neighbours!
