USCMS Collaboration Meeting, Boulder, CO, May 17, 2012 (via EVO) CMS R&D Project: GEM Upgrade in Muon Endcap Marcus Hohlmann Florida Institute of Technology (for the CMS GEM Collaboration) USCMS Collaboration Meeting, Boulder, CO, May 17, 2012 (via EVO)

USCMS Coll. Meeting - M. Hohlmann Premise for Project CMS was designed to have a highly redundant muon system CMS currently has the least redundancy in the most challenging muon region at high η (|η| > 1.6) (because RPCs originally planned there were descoped) Long-term functioning of the muon system into LHC Phase II is of vital interest for CMS The high-η muon region in particular needs robust and redundant tracking and triggering capability in the long run;  Additional robust muon detectors with high spatial and temporal resolution installed in the high-η endcap region can bring benefits in muon triggering, reconstruction, and ID for the medium and long term 5/17/2012 USCMS Coll. Meeting - M. Hohlmann

USCMS Coll. Meeting - M. Hohlmann GEM Endcap Chambers The currently un-instrumented high- RPC region of the muon endcaps presents an opportunity for instrumentation with a detector technology that could sustain the radiation environment long-term and be suitable for operation at the LHC and its future upgrades into Phase II: GEM Detectors GE1/1 in YE1 nose GE3/1 GE4/1 GE2/1 on back of YE1 5/17/2012 USCMS Coll.
