Learning preferences – visual, auditory, verbal, physical (tactile/kinesthetic) Gross and fine motor skills Sensory function – vision, hearing, touch, movement Cognition Language and communication skills Literacy skills (reading and writing) Attention and organizational skills

Providing access to all learners supports UDL principles: Multiple means of representation, to give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge, Multiple means of expression, to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know, and Multiple means of engagement, to tap into learners' interests, offer appropriate challenges, and increase motivation.

The Low Down on Low Tech for Math and Science Dr. Cindy Feist Dr. Tara Jeffs Assistive Technology Trainers Loudoun County Public Schools

Low Tech Math and Science Supports Provide multisensory input … visual, tactile, kinesthetic, auditory. Support access to education for students with different learning styles and students with disabilities. Are inexpensive or totally free; some are made with recycled materials!

PowerPoint Manipulatives Create adapted books flip quizzes, and flash cards with PowerPoint Tutorials:

Math and Science Foldables Curriculum driven 3-D student-made graphic organizers and manipulatives that provide visual, tactile, and kinesthetic supports; many are created in PowerPoint. Videos: foldables.wikispaces.com/

Math and Science Foldables Websites with free foldables:

Math and Science File Folder Activities Interactive learning activities that are mounted inside a file folder! Websites with free downloadable file folder activities: html html ilefolder.shtml ilefolder.shtml

Math and Science Shoebox Work Tasks Provide structured hands-on activities, all contained within a box! Pictures can be added for visual step-by-step directions. Sample activities online: s.html s.html s/workjobs-jan03group/workjobs.htm s/workjobs-jan03group/workjobs.htm

Velcro and Magnets Placing the hook side of Velcro on objects and using indoor/outdoor carpet as a work area, or placing magnets on objects and using cookie sheets as a work area makes it easier for some students to manipulate the objects!

Cookie Sheet Math Laminate circles (cookies) and stick a magnet on the back, then use a cookie sheet as the work area. Free cookie sheet math file folder activity html html Video kDImUidmFwQ kDImUidmFwQ

Ice Cube Tray Math Compartments for sorting poker chips or cubes Addition, subtraction, sequencing, and more Video: =lnoGh-ePyvk =lnoGh-ePyvk

Mini-Offices and Cue Cards Tape two file folders together to form a mini-office or use a CD case to display math or science cue cards, which can be created in MS Word or PowerPoint, or downloaded from free websites, such as: ini_offices.html ini_offices.html

Create customized graph paper with MS Word tables. Size and colors of cells, columns, and rows can be customized for visual and physical accessibility. Laminate the paper and use with dry erase markers. Tutorial:

Scientific Process Rope and Bookmark Provide visual and tactile cues for each step in the scientific process

Adapted books help students interact with the literature using various modifications: Visual (picture symbols, photos) Tactile (textures, manipulatives, props) Auditory (talking photo album, audiobooks)

Wikki Stix This wax-covered yarn sticks to almost anything, provides great tactile input, and is easy to manipulate and form into shapes! Check out the resources at

Tactile Counting Use a hole punch on sticky-back foam to create dots to place on number lines, rulers, or TouchMath © numbers for tactile cues. Place a bead on a pipe cleaner to create a manipulative number line.

Other Low Tech Math and Science Ideas Pringles can multiplication table Cereal box science Activity cubes Clothespin activities Playdough mat Shower curtain calculator
