Personal Pronouns You have already seen that personal verb endings usually function as subject pronouns in Latin: amo: I love amas: you love amat: he/she/ it loves amamus: we love amatis: y’all love amant: they love

Personal Pronouns However, when you want to show EMPHASIS or SHARP CONTRAST between subjects, Latin uses the personal pronouns ego (I) tu (you) is, ea, id (he, she, it)* *We’ll tackle the declension of is/ea/id later on. For right now, let’s learn the declensions of ego and tu.

ego I… mei of me mihi to/for me me …me me It’s all about ME… NOM GEN DAT ACC ABL ego I… mei of me mihi to/for me me …me me from/by/with me

tu You… tui of you tibi to/for you te …you te f/b/w you What do YOU think? NOM GEN DAT ACC ABL tu You… tui of you tibi to/for you te …you te f/b/w you

nos We… nostrum of us nobis to/for us nos …us nobis f/b/w us WE are the world! NOM GEN DAT ACC ABL nos We… nostrum of us nobis to/for us nos …us nobis f/b/w us

vos Y’all… vestrum of y’all vobis to/for y’all vos …y’all vobis Y’ALL come back now! NOM GEN DAT ACC ABL vos Y’all… vestrum of y’all vobis to/for y’all vos …y’all vobis f/b/w y’all

mecum with me! tecum with you nobiscum with us vobiscum with y’all Peace be… mecum with me! tecum with you nobiscum with us vobiscum with y’all

Pronoun Uses Pronouns use the same cases as nouns. Remember your cases uses! Nominative: subjects, predicate nominatives I like the cookie, but Sheila does not. Ego crustulam amo, sed Sheila non amat.

Genitive: “of….” A few of us carried the lumber. Pauci nostrum materiam portaverunt.

Nota Bene! Do not use the genitive personal pronouns to show possession. Use the possessive adjectives instead. You’ve already learned these: meus, mea, meum: my tuus, tua, tuum: your noster, nostra, nostrum: our vester, vestra, vestrum: your We loved our queen. Nostram reginam amavimus. .

Dative: to/for, indirect objects The boy gave me flowers. Puer mihi flores donavit.

Accusative: direct objects, obj. of prepositions I love you! Te amo.

Ablative: means, obj. of prepositions Come to town with us. Veni ad oppidum nobiscum.

with me with us to me Let’s practice! …you Puella mecum ambulat. Venite nobiscum! Te in casa non inveniebam. Narra mihi fabulam. Agricola vobiscum veniet. with me with us …you to me with y’all

…y’all …you to me to us Let’s practice! to y’all 6. Pecuniam vobis dabunt. 7. Vos non amamus. Te videbo. Fer mihi auxilium! Ferte nobis auxilium! to y’all …y’all …you to me to us

with you Let’s practice! …you I you 11. Ubi te inveniemus? 12. Ego aquam porto, tu cibum portas. 13. Puellae tecum venient. …you I you with you

Good practice!!! Turn to page 113 in your workbook and try those sentences in Exercise “B.” You can do it!
