Scott Huckaby Behold, The Bridegroom Comes! (Matthew 25:6) Jewish Wedding Traditions and the… Part I

How might knowing Jewish wedding customs help us better understand this?... Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14:1-3, NKJV) Jesus was drawing an analogy from Jewish marriage customs in biblical times.

How is the church a bride? The Scriptures regard the Church to be the Bride of Christ. We are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:30-32, NKJV)

Jewish Marriage Customs Source: Jesus made it possible for us to spend eternity with Him. Betrothal Custom: It was usual for a marriage covenant to be established as the result of the prospective bridegroom taking the initiative. We love Him because He first loved us. (1 John 4:19, NKJV)

Jesus left His Father's house in heaven and traveled to earth, the home of His prospective Church, over 1900 years ago. Betrothal Custom: The prospective bridegroom would travel from his father's house to the home of the prospective bride. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. (John 6:38, NKJV)

The price Jesus had to pay for His bride was His life. He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, "O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will. (Matthew 26:39, NKJV) Betrothal Custom: The Bridegroom would negotiate with the father of the young woman to determine the price (mohar) that he must pay to purchase his bride.

Jesus redeemed us by paying the penalty for our sin on the cross. Betrothal Custom: Once the bridegroom paid the purchase price, the marriage covenant was thereby established, and the young man and woman were regarded to be husband and wife. For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's. (1 Cor 6:20, NKJV)

The Church has been declared to be sanctified or set apart exclusively for Christ. Betrothal Custom: From the moment the price was paid for the bride, she was declared to be consecrated or sanctified, set apart exclusively for her bridegroom. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word. (Eph 5:25-26, NKJV)

The visible sign that guarantees us of our future wedding with Christ is the presence of the Holy Spirit in us. Todays Custom: The wedding ring is the (beginning) price prospective bridegrooms pay for their bride. Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. (2 Corinthians 1:21-22, NKJV)

The Lords Supper established His covenant with His bride, the church. Betrothal Custom: As a symbol of the covenant relationship that had been established, the groom and bride would drink from a cup of wine over which a betrothal benediction had been pronounced. He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. (1 Cor 11:25, NKJV)

Separation Custom: After the marriage covenant had been established, the groom would leave the home of the bride and return to his father's house. Jesus said to her, Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God. (John 20:17, NKJV) Jesus left the home of the Church and returned to His Father's house in heaven after establishing the new covenant.

As a Jewish couple needed time to prepare for the wedding and their lives together, both the New Jerusalem and the church needs to be completed. Separation Custom: The Bridegroom would remain separate from his bride for a period of about twelve months. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. (John 16:7, NKJV)

As a Jewish bride got her dowry together to take to her husband, the church does good works that have eternal value. Separation Custom: This period of separation afforded the bride time to gather her trousseau and to prepare for married life. Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. (Matt 6:20, NKJV)

Separation Custom: The groom occupied himself with the preparation of living accommodations in his father's house to which he could bring his bride. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. (John 14:2, NKJV) Jesus promised the New Jerusalem which will be our eternal home with Him on earth.

Procession Custom: At the end of the period of separation the groom would come to take his bride to live with him. I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. (John 14:2, NKJV) Christ promised to return to take His Church to live with Him at the end of His period of separation from the Church.

Night is when most people sleep… the world will be totally oblivious to the Lord coming for the church. Procession Custom: The taking of the bride usually took place at night. For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. (John 14:2, NKJV)

When the Lord comes for the Church, He will be accompanied with an angelic escort from His Father's house in heaven. Procession Custom: The groom, best man and other male escorts would leave the groom's father's house and conduct a torch light procession to the home of the bride. For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels (Matt 16:27, NKJV)

The Church does not know the exact time of Christ's coming for her. This reinforces a pre- tribulation rapture of the church. Procession Custom: Although the bride was expecting her groom to come for her, she did not know the exact time of his coming. of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father (Mark 13:32, NKJV)

Christ's arrival to take the Church will be preceded by a shout. Procession Custom: The groom's arrival would be preceded by a shout that forewarned the bride to be prepared for the coming of the groom. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God (1Thes 4:16, NKJV)

The Church will return with Christ to His Father's house in heaven after she is snatched from the earth. we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air (1Thes 4:16, NKJV) Procession Custom: After the groom received his bride together with her female attendants, the enlarged wedding party would return from the bride's home to the groom's father's house.

Christ and the Church will find the souls of Old Testament saints assembled in heaven when they arrive. other sheep I have which are not of this fold… and there will be one flock and one shepherd (John 10:16, NKJV) Procession Custom: Upon arriving at the fathers house, the wedding party would find that the wedding guests had assembled already.

The Jewish couple being carried up in the air represents the Lord and Church meeting in the air and being escorted to heaven. Consummation Custom: Shortly after arrival the bride and groom would be escorted by the other members of the wedding party lifted up on chairs to the bridal chamber. we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air (1Thes 4:16, NKJV)

During the 7-year Tribulation, the Church will be in heaven totally hidden from those on earth. Consummation Custom: Prior to entering the chamber the bride remained veiled so that no one could see her face. Because you have kept My command to persevere, I also will keep you from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world (Rev 3:10, NKJV)

The church has a special place in the plan of God and we are privileged to be part of it. Consummation Custom: While the groomsmen and bridesmaids would wait outside, the bride and groom would enter the bridal chamber alone. many who are first will be last, and the last first (Matt 19:30, NKJV)

Christ and the Church will experience spiritual union after their arrival at His Father's house in heaven, thereby consummating their relationship. Consummation Custom: In the privacy of the bridal chamber they would enter into physical union for the first time, thereby consummating the marriage. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known (1 Cor 13:12, NKJV)

The angels attending the Lord announce the union of the church to the Old Testament saints. Wedding Feast Custom: Members of the wedding party pass on the news of the marital union to the wedding guests. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:32, NKJV)

Lively celebration will be taking place in heaven amongst Gods people while the tribulation is taking place on earth. Wedding Feast Custom: Upon receiving the good news of the union, wedding guests would feast and make merry for the next seven days. Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready (Rev 19:7, NKJV)

The Church will have its own private time with the Lord during tribulation. Wedding Feast Custom: During the seven days of the wedding festivities, the bride remained hidden in the bridal chamber. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me (Rev 3:20, NKJV)

When the Lord reveals Himself to the world, we will be with Him so all the world we see us too. Wedding Feast Custom: At the conclusion of the seven days of the wedding, the groom would bring his bride out of the bridal chamber with her veil removed, so that all could see her. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory (Col 3:4, NKJV)

What is the significance of the Jewish wedding analogy? He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God (John 3:18, NKJV) Just as the proposal that the Jewish bridegroom made could be accepted or rejected, so Christ's proposal to us can be accepted or rejected.

What is the significance of the analogy for believers? We commit spiritual adultery by trusting in the godless world system and the things that please it rather than Christ and the things that please Him. For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2, NKJV)
